Tomb Raider 2 Walkthrough | Tibetan Foothills | Tomb Raider Vault

Level 11: Tibetan Foothills

  • 3 secrets
  • 2 keys
  • 29 kills
  • 28 pickups altogether, including secret items

At the start of the level is a movie clip which sees Lara floating to the surface and stealing a plane belonging to Bartoli (along with a nice, warm flight jacket that she is very pleased to see!), which she uses to fly to Tibet. However, before she can reach her full destination, the plane gets into difficulties and Lara bails out just in time as the plane crashes into the mountains.

As Lara begins to explore, an over-attentive eagle visits from above...kill it then follow the passage to a slope. Look ahead and you will see several snowballs ready to splatter you. Slide down the slope, jump over the snowballs, then run into an alcove to the left to avoid another lot. Come out and turn right and look at the wall on the right..here you'll see some very thin ice. Shoot it out and kill the leopard. Inside are some automatic pistol clips...pick it up, the head back out, turn left and follow the path toward the area where the snowballs rolled from.

Continue into a cave, where you'll come across another ice wall. This can't be shot out, and there's a slope with a killer drop behind it. You need to run and jump toward it, through the glass, and when you start sliding, keep your finger on 'action' and Lara should grab the climable wall at the other side. Climb up and to the right to drop onto a rock path. (Note: you can also jump forward to grab the wall at the bottom of the slope.)

Follow the path to an opening, where you'll need to deal with two more eagles. In the distance you'll see a hut with a snowmobile outside, which is where you'll end up. There are now two ways you can get there...the long way or the short way¹.

The short way: Turn around and drop to grab the edge, just outside of the cave entrance. Drop to slide on the slope beneath, then grab the edge of that. Shimmy right and pull up. Turn around to face the water. Look across the water and down, slightly to the left...you will see a large medipack lying on the rock there. Position yourself so you can run and jump to the angled block just to the right of the medipack (screenshot). Lara will take some damage, but it will save a little time. Pick up the large medipack and continue.

The long way: Turn around and drop to grab the wall, just outside of the cave entrance. Drop to slide on the slope beneath, then grab the edge, and drop to the ledge below, near a cave entrance. Go through it, and to the left. You'll see a passage ahead over a small drop with water underneath. There are dangerous icicles on the ceiling there, so you need to be careful. Drop into the water², climb up the ice-ladder and pull up, but don't walk forward until the icicles have dropped. Walk through them, and continue until you are over the water again. Jump to the rocks on the right, then turn left to find another cave entrance. Follow it until you come to a kind of intersection...going on ahead and up will bring you to a dead end (but may be worth a look for you). Take the left turn and slide down to a cave with a pool of water, and more icicles on the ceiling. Wade through the water, keeping to the left wall, and hopefully the icicles will fall harmlessly in front of Lara. Carry on until you come to the water, and you can see the ledge with the large medipack in front and slightly to the left of you. You need to run and jump to the far side of the angled ledge to the immediate right (screenshot), then run and jump across to the medipack ledge³,pick up the medipack and continue.

There may be an eagle waiting for you after you have picked up the medi, so deal with this before you climb up the snow covered rocks to the hut with the snowmobile. There are two armed goons patrolling around it, so take them out and search the bodies for some two sets of automatic pistol clips and another large medipack. I found these enemies quite difficult to drop, so you may want to use something that packs a bigger punch than your pistols.

To the right of the hut from where you came into this area to find a small gate (screenshot)...go to it and pick up the level's first secret, the Silver Dragon.

Now for the fun part...jump onto the snowmobile⁴ and head left, to the dark cave entrance (cue some really cool music!). A gunman tries to stop you, but you can just ride over him and pick up his shotgun shells. Follow the passage in the cave to an open area with a series of ramps. You'll need to ride over these to get out of the area, but there are two huge blocks of ice in the way (screenshot), so you need to climb into the small cave entrance to reach them and move them so you can get past. Climb up onto the ramp in front of the small cave, then jump and grab to it, pull up and follow the passage to the ice blocks. There are a couple of snow leopards there, so get rid of them first.

Move the blocks into the small entrance you just came from, so they are out of the way of the opening. Jump back down and get back on the snowmobile. Now to the tricky part...you need to ride the snowmobile through the opening you just cleared. To do this, position the snowmobile so it's at the bottom of the ramp directly in front of the area entrance (screenshot). Reverse back as far as you can, then move forward by pressing the forward direction button. Drive off the end, and immediately tap the right direction button to land on the next ramp. From there, ride over into the opening ahead (screenshot), pressing 'action' to get a good speed boost, then heave a sigh of relief! If you managed this first time, well done...I didn't! :-(

Drive over the next opening ahead the same way⁵ (drive up the left ramp), and stop when you come to a kind of fork-in-the-road. Follow the path to the right until you come to another ice-ladder. Before you climb up, take a look in the corner opposite (turn right when you enter the ladder area)...there are two pairs of grenades on the ground. Once you have them, climb the ladder and pull the lever on the wall opposite the entrance to open a gate somewhere.

Climb back down the ladder and deal with the two goons that have emerged below, searching them thoroughly before you continue for some M-16 clips and a small medipack. Board the snowmobile and jump the gap on the left path, round the left corner through the gate you just opened. Keep going, mowing down the three goons that get in your way. Continue until you come to a long ledge over a deep canyon. Before you cross it, dismount and look to the ledge on the right...Yes, it's the Jade Dragon! Go get it with a running jump over to the ledge, then ready pistols for a couple of leopards back on the long ledge.

If you look on the ground right at the bottom of the other ledge, you will see two pairs of grenades; you can get these now or later...three leopards will appear when you touch the bottom, but you can jump back over the pit to the white ledge above it to shoot them from safety. When you have the grenades, climb back up the ladder and get back onto your snowmobile.

The next jump is a biggie, so you will need as much speed as you can get...rev up, then drive forward, hopefully making it over the to the other side of the ledge! Once there, get off your vehicle and take a look around...high up on the right wall are a load of nasty snowballs just ready to roll! Walk towards them slowly to set off the first set. Go back and jump toward the slope from where the snowballs descended (triggering the second set) and press action to grab the edge. Climb down the ladder to the opening in the wall, drop then immediately press action to grab the ladder below the opening. Pull up and enter to find the drawbridge key. Go through the hole in the ground there and follow the passage to an ice wall. Kill the gun-wielding baddie that appears.

Keep going until you come to a lever. There are some icicles above it which you can trigger just by walking slowly towards them, but I managed to trigger them just by running past the alcove. Pull the lever to open the exit gate nearby. This area is where you saw the grenades from above, so if you didn't get them before, you can do it now. If not, to the immediate left of the exit gate is a ladder...climb it to get back to your snowmobile.

You now have to drive part-way up the right-hand wall where the snowballs were...taking care not to get caught under any remaining ones! Drive to the next large cave area and use the key in the wall to the left of the entrance to raise the drawbridge. You can do the next part with or without the snowmobile, it doesn't really matter. You are going to end up with another snowmobile soon, so it's up to you. I normally use the snowmobile until I reach the next cavern as it's easier to get past the avalanch with it.

In the next cavern, you'll see an area with a frozen pool and a drawbridge. Use the key to lower the drawbridge It's on the left wall as you enter the area. Walking or driving, you need to go across the drawbridge and past the avalanche warning sign on the right. Drive or run and jump past the danger area and head for the next large cavern. As you go, you'll hear a loud rumbling sound...this is the avalanche effectively blocking your way back. Jump over the gap in the floor as you go. In the large cavern ahead, you'll see the hut key opposite where you come in. Be careful, though, as when you pick it up, a tough bad guy enters on his super-cool snowmobile and tries to mow you down! To kill him in relative safety, climb onto the small ledge to the right of the key, keep to the pointy part at the front of it so you don't get knocked down, and shoot him from there. Either that, or just take your chances and jump around while you shoot and hope he doesn't get you first! I did it this way and it only took a few seconds to down him with my Uzis.

You can try out his snowmobile if you want, but it can't jump over large gaps as it's too heavy; but it is fitted with guns which you can have a bit of a play around with! However, to get back to the hut, you will need your old snowmobile...exit the area under the open drawbridge and make your way all the way back to the open area with the ramps, taking care to build up enough speed to get back over all of the gaps as you go.

Exit the ramp area and you will come to a snowbank blocking your path, with two leopards prowling around just past it. They can't reach you if you don't go up onto the ledge, so you can use your pistols to kill them to save ammo. Take them out then go the rest of the way on foot. You can enter the hut safely, but don't pull the lever inside until you have retrieved the two small medipacks, two sets of Uzi clips and two sets of M-16 clips in the room. Once you've pulled the lever to open the last gate, roll and exit the hut in a hurry and go to the right around the hut until you can climb up onto it. Three thugs are bearing down on your position, so get rid of them from there and search them when they are down for a large medipackUzi clips and automatic pistol clips.

Go through the gate that you just opened until you reach the edge of another cavern entrance. Don't drop down as there's a second snowmobile baddie who will appear very quickly. Instead, walk to the left side of the edge, jump over to the angled ledge, roll, then run and jump back into the entrance (screenshot). You can get the snowmobiler from there, but be careful...he shoots!

When he's down, take his snowmobile and continue on. You will come to a chasm, but you won't be able to jump over it as the new vehicle is not powerful enough...you will have to drive around the rock wall on the left-hand side. As soon as you are over, come to a standstill and dismount. The chasm has an ice-ladder, so climb down it, and as soon as you reach the bottom, sideflip to the left to avoid two lots of snowballs. When they have rolled past, enter the alcove and pick up the Gold Dragon.

Climb back up the ladder and get back on your vehicle, continuing until you reach another open area. This time, there are two snowmobile baddies to attack you! You can either stay on yours and shoot them as you ride around, or jump off before you enter the area and climb up the rocks to the right and get them from there.

Drive a vehicle to the other end of the area and climb off. There's a block of ice that you can move. Push it twice then quickly climb on top of it and arm yourself as two goons come a-shootin' from the right! Take care of them, then drop down and push the block once more if you want to use your snowmobile. There's a chasm with a body of water underneath, and that's where you need to go. However, there's a bad guy at the bottom who will start shooting, so get him from where you are if you can.

You can drive the snowmobile over the edge to land in the water, or you can make your way down on foot: To get down, drop and grab the edge of the ledge and shimmy as far to your left as possible. Drop to slide down a slope onto an ice ledge. From the very corner of that ledge, facing the water, run and jump into it. Swim to the left side where there is a brown ledge. Climb out and follow the passage from there to end the level.

If you missed anything while playing the PC version, here is the savegame file with all kills, pickups and secrets.

*If they don't appear, drop and hang from the edge to draw them out, then pull back up quickly to deal with them

¹ Please be careful not to run outside the cave as there's a nasty drop there! Not that I would do anything like that, of course...ahem!

² During these very cold levels, you may notice a blue health bar at the top right of the screen when Lara is in the water...that's because the water is so cold Lara will die if she stays in too long, so keep an eye on it.

³ If you fall into the water, you can climb out and up the ice ladder to get back (screenshot), but I advise you to save your game before any large maneuver, then you can just load your game in from there.

⁴ It is possible to get through this level without the snowmobiles, but this way is much more fun! Also, the controls for the vehicle are the same as they were for the speedboat in the Venice levels.

⁵ You can always slow down by pressing the 'back' button on your controller while driving the snowmobile.
